GUY BAILEY from Barlaston, CHRIS JOHNSTONE from Stone, plus another Stone lad NICK CONNELL were in this quite successful NWBHM band. Once famously supported The Rolling Stones, and were also signed to Sharon Osbourne's management company. The band are still together, but without the local lads.

RED FETISH
A recording-only duo comprising the ex ALL THE MADMEN & DECADES BY NIGHT duo NEALE DOWN and MICK RICHARDSON, the pair also worked in the same way as THE CONE.The American label OBSCURE IDENTITIES 1980 put out a collection of songs in 2011 on a vinyl release called AND A PAIR OF SHOES.

THE RHEAD BROTHERS
THE RHEAD BROTHERS had an album called DEDICATE out on EMI in 1977. They were JOHN and STEVE RHEAD, from the Hanley area. They were former pupils at St Joseph's in Trent Vale.
JOHN was fanatical about The Byrds and the album was very much in the folk-rock genre, with close harmonies a la Byrds or Everlys. On the sleeve they list lots of people and institutions that they 'dedicate' the LP to -- including Port Vale FC, Radio Stoke and Lotus Records.
They were joined on the album by well-known rock sideman of the time including Rob Townsend (Family, The Manfreds) and Charlie Whitney (Family, Streetwalkers).
JOHN RHEAD had previously been a member of a blues band in the Potteries called DOGGO.

DAVE ROBERTS
Significant in the '60s fronting bands TERRY KING & THE SAINTS post ROY GRANT (line up TERRY KING, TONY HOPPLEY, DAVE ROBERTS, BARRY SERGEANT.), THE KINGPINS post LANCE HARVEY (line up: DAVE ROBERTS, DAVE STIRUP, KEITH and COLIN TURNER, and ROGER WOOD.), HARVEY'S TEAM (line up: MICK MATHEWS, DAVE ROBERTS, IAN RILY and EWART BELL.) Played at the Star Club, Hamburg with these three bands. Fronted THE KENSINGTON MEWS (line up: DAVE ROBERTS, BARRY CARTLIDGE, GRAHAM BAGSHAW, GEOFF OWEN.)
Duo's: GOODCHILD - DAVE ROBERTS and STEVE LAZZARI (1969), MASON AND YOUNG - DAVE ROBERTS and GEOFF HALL (1971). Toured US and Turkey with this duo.
DAVE ROBERTS solo career: as DAVID McLAINE - toured Europe and Turkey, recorded on Rampage records a Tony Todd penned single 'Rosie' b/w self-penned 'Cie Lamour', which became the A side in Germany on the Bellaphon lable.
Finished touring in 1974 and concentrated playing the local pubs.

RIFLEMAN OATCAKE
Late 60's outfit made up of a group of Hanley High School sixth-formers. PETE WILLIAMS, vocals; PHIL WILSHAW, lead guitar; MARK SMITH, rhythm guitar; DAVE RUSHTON bass; TIM FREDERICKS, drums. The Shock

The great white hope of the early Stoke Musicians Collective, this band based at Alsager College never quite lived up to expectations. Recorded a cassette single, and also signed with the indie Zip Records, but no releases were forthcoming. Went out on a nationa tour supporting Weapons Of Peace, eventually moved up to Edinburgh. SKEPTIX
Longton based punk band, comprising SNOTTY on vocals, FISH (STEVE BROOKES) on guitar, USH on bass, and CHIG (IAN CHADWICK) on drums. FISH & CHIG were previously in THE VERMIN. A second generation DISCHARGE outfit, they released many singles in the 1980s. Played the 1982 CLAP HANDS gig under the name CHAOS.

Warning - urban myth about to be exploded!!! SLASH wasn't born in Stoke.
The guitarist with American pap-metallers Guns 'n' Roses was born in Islington in July 1965.
Allegedly, he lived for part of his childhood in Stoke. I never met him, and I've never met anyone who has either. Have you??
Perhaps he was chewing on a bacon & cheese oatcake when he first heard Alice Cooper? That's about as much influence we can claim for his musical career.
Definitely no son of Stoke.

Played the infamous CLAP HANDS concert in 1982. Formed in '77 under the name EMERGENCY. Line-up: CHRIS PLIMBLEY - drums, GRAHAM HOWE - guitar, MARK HAYWARD - keys, KEV BOCHEWSKI - bass and vox. Punk influenced with a nod to the big guns of the sixties.

SONS OF MONKEYS
More of a collective than a band, fronted by GRAINGER REECE, main man behind the STOKE MUSICIANS COLLECTIVE. GRAINGER had previously been part of WALTER MITTY. SONS OF MONKEYS recorded two songs - Maxwyn Is An Architect, & Bells - which were released on a double A-side single with DECADES BY NIGHT'S Life Spiral. The band performed at the S.M.C.'s CLAP HANDS concert. THE SONS OF MONKEYS were for a time known as THE WESTERN TRIO.
GRAINGER also worked under the pseudonym ED COLI, and gigged with an outfit called THE EMPTY PIANOS.

THE SQUARE PEGS
New wave/pop combo from the early eighties, previously known as ENIGMA, & THE SQUARE PEGS. TONY BOYLE, on gtr/vox, he later joined ALL THE RAGE & SQUIBNOCKET. Other members were KEVIN MARTIN on bass and vox, MARK GEORGIOU on synth, NEDDER NAYLOR on drums. Some members became SACK THE JUGGLER. BOYLE now plays in an acoustic due THE PLUCKERS.
SQUIBNOCKET
Also known as SQUIBNOCKET FARM. 3 members, NICK STEWART, NICCI HEATH & PHIL ROBINSON went on to form E-BOW. TONY BOYLE (SQUARE PEGS, ALL THE RAGE) was also an original member. STEVE ROBERTS played guitar. CHRIS PLIMBLEY played drums between 1994 and 1997. NICK STEWART aka SQUIB aka QUIVER went on to join STUNTRYDER.
DEAN BRINDLEY, father of AGENT BLUE'S CALUM MURPHY, was manager at some point.

With a sound reminiscent of the Velvets, or Them, and clad in leather 'n' lipstick, this early 80s band from Stafford promised much. Released an EP entitled New Blood in '83.

KENNY STEVENS
Club/pub singer/comedian, real name KEN KNOWLES, played almost everywhere throughout the 70s and 80s. Ran the Bumble Studio in Penkhull along with BARRY CARTLIDGE. Played in THE ESCORTS in the 60s, don't know for sure if this was the same band who were big faves in The Cavern. Also played in THE CHANGING TIMES.

A 4 piece rock band, heavily influenced by late sixties British R & B/Psychedelia, eg The Pretty Things, although they were actually in existence around 1979/80. De scribed themselves as avant garde blues.Veterans of the STOKE MUSICIANS COLLECTIVE Battle Of The Bands Scene. Members included DAVE PARKS aka DAVE WHITNEY, bass & vocals, he went on to play with FREUDIAN LIGHTSHIP, THE HEADSET, & THE HIDDEN PERSUADERS; NIGEL MACHIN, lead guitar, ROBERT JENNINGS, drums, and ANDY STUBBS, rhythm & vocals; he later played in THE INKERMAN STREET RHINOS. Gigged under the name OASIS in 78/79!

STRANGE FOX
DES PARTON - vocals. TERRY FOX and MIKE STRANGE were also members. The band were taken under the wing of Tony Hatch in the early 70s.

STRATE ANGEL
Market Drayton based heavy rockers, comprising SHED - guitar, SHAUN GREEN - bass & vocals, WITT - drums. Contributed the track Rock-o-la to the Stoke Musicians Collective's album CRY HAVOC. Split in 1981.

STUNTRYDER
Formed in 1999, Foo Fighters influenced rock band. Released a self-financed single entitled Lara Croft. SQUIB, aka QUIVER joined this band after leaving SQUIBNOCKET FARM. The band started in 1999 with MIL (MARK MILWARD) on drums, STINGRAY (JOHN KAY) on bass, and HOWLER (ALEX HOWLE) on guitar, vocals by SQUIB.
THE SUPRAGODS
Newcastle based band featuring NIGEL WILKES on vocals & guitar, ROGER McINTOSH (previous WALTER MITTY member) on guitar, plus unknown bassist & drummer. Postpunkpsychedelia type noise. Evolved into ESPRIT DE CORPS.
THE SUTHERLAND BROTHERS
Folk rock duo from the early 70s. GAVIN & IAIN SUTHERLAND, although based in Blythe Bridge, were in fact natives of Scotland. Originally known as THE SUTHERLAND BROTHERS BAND, they released a number of albums for Island Records, which sold moderately. One member during the early days was Bruce Thomas, who went on to play with Elvis Costello & The Attractions.
In the mid-70s, the brothers collaborated with folk-rock group Quiver, the highlight of this union was the Top 5 hit The Arms Of Mary in 1976.
THE SUTHERLAND BROTHERS are probably best known for writing the song Sailing, which was a Number 1 hit for Rod Stewart.
